Enthroned in Righteous Judgement
“But the LORD sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness.” (Psalm 9:7–8, ESV)
But the LORD sits enthroned forever
Heavenly Father, I’m find so much comfort knowing you are enthroned forever. You are King of Kings and Lord of Lords now and forever. I don’t have to worry about your term ending or you stepping off your throne. You are there now and will always be there.
Father, we need this reminder right now—especially in an election year. The repeated campaign themes are messianic promises. They keep trying to convince us THEY are the savior of the world—that THEY are the ultimate authority who can save us. Yet, we know these are lies. They are finite, sinful people. They only serve a few years. They don’t have as much authority as they think they do. They aren’t as important as they think they are.
So, Father, forgive us when we buy into their lies. Forgive us when we put our trust in them rather than you. Forgive us when we look to them for salvation rather than you. Then, Father, please help us rest knowing that you are the One seated on the throne right now and you will be there FOREVER.
He has established his throne for justice
Father, not only will you be King forever, but your throne has been established for justice—REAL JUSTICE. You are a good King who has promised to punish all evil/wickedness and promised to reward true righteousness. We know that much of what is portrayed as “justice” in our current culture falls far short of your standards. So, we take great pleasure and comfort knowing that your justice is true justice AND that you will bring about FULL justice at Christ’s coming.
Father, help us remember that day. We rarely look beyond our current situation—let alone the final judgement. Yet, you repeatedly spoke about that day. You painted graphic pictures of fish being separated from a net (Matthew 13:47-50) or sheep separated from goats (Matthew 25:31-46). You gave us these images to remember. You don’t want us to ignore them. So, Father, help us live in light of this final judgement.
He judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness.
Father, we also find comfort that you will make everything right one day. We look around at our current culture and see injustice everywhere. We see innocent lives injured; we see wicked people being set free; we see liars prospering… We’re surrounded by injustice and we KNOW we are too weak to deal with it. Without you, Father, we would have no hope.
Yet, you have promised to judge the world in righteousness and the people with uprightness. You will not be a crooked judge acting like a politician or being bought with a bribe. You will make your judgements accurately and righteously. This brings us comfort because we know you will make things right. The wicked will not prosper forever, they will face your righteous judgement. The righteous will not suffer forever, one day they will hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant…Enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:21, ESV).
