Day Twenty-Eight in the Dominican Republic
Since today is the last day of June, and also the last day of the fiscal year for many organizations, Steve needed an office day to wrap a bunch of things up. For our family, that meant we had a free day.
We started off the day with a project in the ministry center. A couple weeks ago, Steve showed me a bookshelf full of Sunday School material that needed to be sorted and organized before our trip finished. I told him we could take care of that. The kicker was that we needed to have power in order to do the sorting because we needed lights. So, we've been waiting for the combination of free-time and power for the past couple weeks. This morning was the morning.......at least for a little bit. We pulled every book out of the bookcase, sorted them, packaged some, and placed the rest back in the bookshelf. I wish I would have taken more pictures this morning, but I was busy working. The only picture I got was of the organized bookshelf. However, the power went out partway through the process. So, we finished up by the light of a cellphone flashlight. The end product was satisfactory and everyone enjoyed doing it. So, it was a good way to start the day.
The rest of the day was spent in a pretty typical fashion--reading, writing, painting, playing outside, etc... One of the benefits today, with it being the end of the fiscal year, was that there were meeting in the ministry center all day, which means the generator was running all day, which meant we had A/C all day and didn't have to worry about running out of power. So, it was a good day to hang around the apartment and relax.
Then, later in the afternoon, we called a taxi and made a trip to the grocery store. Back in the States, we go grocery shopping every couple week or so. However, in the Dominican Republic, we've had to get groceries every two or three days. Part of the reason for this is our power situation. We're never sure how long the power is going to be out. As a result, we never are sure how long we can keep meat (we learned this the hard way during week one). Also, our refrigerator is pretty small. So, we have to make trips often. Today, we turned it into a longer "outing" by getting some frozen yogurt at BON and picking up a few odds and ends. It was nice to get out for a bit.
That's about it for. Not much exciting, but it was restful. I plan on getting the rest of the kids to provide their own blog posts over the next few days. That way you can hear from them.
Buenos Noches!
